Centre of Excellence in Microbiome
Harnessing the Microbial wealth for a sustainable future
The Centre of Excellence in Microbiome (CoEM) is an initiative of the Government of Kerala, established under the aegis of the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), in association with the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council (K-DISC) and the scientific mentoring of the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (BRIC- RGCB). CoEM aims to foster cutting-edge research and entrepreneurship across diverse microbiome domains—human, animal, plant, aquatic, and environment. With the motto “Microbes for Life,” the Centre is dedicated to harnessing the potential of microbial communities to drive innovation and ensure a sustainable future.
Currently, the Centre is in its establishment phase at its interim location at KINFRA Film and Video Park, Kazhakoottam. The Centre’s state-of-the-art permanent campus is coming up at the Bio360 Life Sciences Park, Thonnakkal, Thiruvananthapuram.
Research Domains

Human Microbiome
The human microbiota, encompassing microorganisms inhabiting various body sites, has been duly proposed as an ‘essential organ’ of the human body.

Animal Microbiome
The animal microbiome has significant implications for animal health, productivity and welfare.

Plant Microbiome
Phytomicrobiome comprising bacteria and fungi are integral to plant nutrition and stress resistance towards biotic/abiotic factors thereby dictating plant growth and productivity

Aquatic Microbiome
The aquatic microbiome plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and productivity of aquaculture by preventing pathogen colonization and stimulating appropriate immune responses.

Environment Microbiome
The environmental microbiome drives ecological balance through microbial roles in bioenergy, waste valorization, and sustainability.
